Ghana Compact Media Forum

In collaboration with the GJA, GIBA and PRINPAG, we brought together over 30 media persons from various media houses and associations in Accra to brief them on the Compact process to-date. The Ghana Compact recognizes the media as integral to the success of what it seeks to achieve and used the occasion to directly engage with them in open dialogue around a more strategic partnership to foster more inclusion and participation moving forward.

This is a key achievement for Compact, particularly as we move into the next phase of high-level engagements with the various Political Party leaders on the outcomes from the Citizens’ Convention- The Social Contract and Accountability Mechanisms. The media representatives present were pleased with the discussions and happy to offer their full support and commitment to the Compact.

In attendance, we also had some of our key Partners including the NCCE, NDPC and NETRIGHT who shared some insight into their collaboration and contributions to Compact. They also added their voices to the importance of media participation to drive the objectives of the Compact to ensure its success.

Citizens’ Convention

A gathering of over 500 Ghanaians representing all key stakeholder groups including political leaders, government agencies, civil society organizations, women and youth groups, professional associations, private sector groups, and university students for dialogue and a national consensus on the country’s challenges and critical issues. The discussions pulled on the analysis provided by the Ghana Compact Partners and the engagement and feedback from fellow citizens to debate and adopt a Compact Declaration, which will serve as a working Social Contract between the citizens of Ghana and their government, irrespective of the political party in power.

District Level Citizens’ Engagements

In Collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), we visited a total of seven (7) regions in Ghana to meet with district representatives and deliberate on the key issues confronting Ghana’s economic and political transformation.

The areas covered included youth education and skills, private sector development, health, fiscal responsibility, gender equality, national planning, and climate change. In each region/district, three different demographics/groups were targeted on separate days—young people (aged 18-35 years) to discuss youth education and skills issues; small business owners and entrepreneurs to discuss private sector issues; and a cross-section of the population to discuss the other Compact issues.

Each engagement had around 40 participants per day from selected districts around the region’s capital city meaning that for each region, we engaged with a total of 120 people over a 3-day period.

District-Level Citizens’ Engagement Training with NCCE

A two-day training program at the Crystal Palm Hotel in Accra aimed to equip moderators with the necessary skills to effectively lead the citizens’ engagements and report on the outcomes. Participants included the Chairperson, Executive Secretary, Regional Directors and Deputy Directors from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), selected from various regions for the Citizens’ Engagements. The training focused on key Compact thematic areas: National Planning, Health, Fiscal Governance, Climate Change, Private Sector Development, and Youth Employment, and Skills Development.

2023 Past Ghana Compact Events

Compact Update Dinner

ACET hosted Compact partners to a dinner to bring them up to speed on the Compact’s progress, to discuss fundraising strategies as well as the proposed Ghana 2050 Campaign intended to ramp up awareness of and engagement with the Compact. The discussions generated good ideas and feedback that will help shape the Compact going forward.

Private Sector Roundtable Meeting

Hosted by ACET at the Holiday Inn, representatives of various private sector associations met to explore better collaborative strategies for the development of the business ecosystem in Ghana.

Climate Technical Consultation

Climate risk poses a significant threat not only to Ghana’s economic transformation but our very survival. Given that the impact of the climate crisis is and will be most felt in Northern Ghana, the Ghana Compact brought together key Climate stakeholders and experts in Tamale to discuss practical ways to address the climate risk and environmental challenges facing Ghana.

Values Twitter Spaces

The Ghana Compact continued its series of virtual citizen engagements with a Twitter spaces conversation on Values on 9th June 2023. The Twitter Space provided a platform for citizens to share their ideas and perspectives on how to bring about the mindset shift critical for Ghana’s transformation.

Building A Strong And Vibrant Private Sector To Drive Economic Transformation

On May 1, a group of private sector leaders attended the Twitter Spaces discussion Building a Strong and Vibrant Private Sector to Drive Economic Transformation. The event was part of the Compact for Ghana, an initiative led by ACET and partnering policy institutes in Ghana with the goal of setting a new consensus vision for the country. The Compact aims to address Ghana’s biggest challenges by outlining solutions and setting targets to track progress.

Building a Secure Future for the Ghanaian Youth Twitter Spaces Conversation

On March 31, thousands of Ghanaians attended the Twitter Spaces discussion Building a Secure Future for the Ghanaian Youth. The Twitter Space provided a platform for young people to share their ideas and perspectives on how to secure a better future for the youth of Ghana.

Youth Employment and Empowerment Technical Consultation

Despite laudable efforts by the current and past Administrations, Ghana continues to struggle to absorb its burgeoning youth population into the labor market. The conversations at this event explored ways to nurture the talents and skills of Ghanaian youth and raise future leaders in all spheres (business, politics, civil service, media, and civil society).

Education Technical Consultation 

The Ghana Compact technical consultations continued with a workshop on education. Participants drawn from government agencies and private sector discussed ways to ensure relevant, quality, and sustainable education at the pre-tertiary level (Primary, Secondary and TVET education). 

Constitutional Review Forum

Following the meeting of constitution experts, the previous week, a second meeting constituting Ghanaian statesmen was convened. This esteemed group further deliberated upon matters relating to constitutional reforms and suggested actionable ways to move the review process forward.

Development Planning Technical Consultation

Representatives from ministry agencies, private sector, MMDA’s and CSO’s came together to discuss the challenges that have plagued national development planning over the last 30 years, the structures required to make the NDPC more effective and the systems that need to be put in place at the local government level for effective implementation of development plans. Participants also got the opportunity to learn best practices from development practitioners from India and Kenya.

Constitutional Review Technical Consultation

After several technical consultations on the challenges facing the nation, it became apparent that the solutions to these issues are only feasible if they are underpinned by constitutional reforms. To that end, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in collaboration with the Ghana Compact and the NCCE brought together constitution experts to prioritse proposed constitution reforms and construct a feasible roadmap for implementation.

Gender Technical Consultation

Held at the Holiday Inn, Accra, the half day workshop on Gender was well attended participants coming from leading civil society organizations and women’s groups, the academia, representatives from political parties and state institutions as well as seasoned and highly respected gender activists. The discussions covered topics like access to land, women’s rights, women’s access to political power and leadership positions and inequalities in health and education. The Gender technical consultation was co-hosted by the African Center for Economic Transformation and NETRIGHT.

2022 Past Ghana Compact Events

Launch of the Ghana Compact   

The brainchild of Dr. Amoako, founder and President of African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), the Ghana Compact was launched on December 6th at the Accra International Conference Center. Developed by ACET in partnership with major policy institutes and civil society organizations in Ghana, the Compact outlines goals for governance, political processes, economic management, and inclusion for the country over the next 25 years. 

Values Workshop 

Following the values discussion held at the Peduase retreat, a Values workshop was held at the African Regent to progress the conversation and to define the values and radical mind shift needed to bring about Ghana’s political and economic transformation.

Fiscal Technical Consultation 

The Fiscal technical consultation co-hosted by the Parliamentary Finance Select Committee and ACET brought together policy experts and past managers of Ghana’s economy to deliberate on the fiscal challenges Ghana has faced over the past three decades and how to address them. Participants discussed three thematic areas: Resource Mobilization, Expenditure Management and Debt

Private Sector Technical Consultation 

In collaboration with the Association of Ghana Industries, ACET held the first of a series of Compact technical consultations at the Alisa hotel, ridge. This workshop -which focused on Private Sector development -brought together business leaders to discuss proposed reforms to transform the Ghanaian business ecosystem over the next 25 years. 

Dinner with Compact Advisory Group.

ACET hosted a dinner for the Compact Advisory Group at the Movempick Ambassador hotel. Guests were given an update on the Compact process, and they shared insights and gave advice on the way forward.

Compact briefing with former President Kufour

After the Compact retreat at Peduase, Dr. Amoako of ACET together with other key personalities met with former President Kufour. The group gave him an update on the discussions and conclusions drawn from the retreat as well as next steps for the Ghana Compact.

The Ghana Compact Retreat

The Ghana Compact Retreat was held at the Peduase Valley Resort from July 13th to 14th. The retreat which was convened by the African Center for Economic Transformation brought together over 50 participants. The overall objectives were to discuss technical papers prepared by leading policy institutes, set out the roadmap for national consultations, review progress in planning for the launch of the Compact and to deliberate on the way forward to ensure the success of the Compact.
